The story: I bought this from a nice man in Liberty, because he made my face look so glowy and dewy I wanted to cry. Thankfully, I didn’t. I’d come across Hourglass on a million blogs, and noted it was stocked on Net-a-Porter, which felt like a testament to its quality. Previous vegan or cruelty-free make-up trials had not been good, so I abandoned the internet and went in-store to try it.
How I used it: whether it’s the right or the wrong way (it’s definitely the wrong way), I use a kabuki brush to loosely apply this over my forehead and cheeks, then lightly blend with an actual bronzer brush. I also use it as gentle shading on my upper eye lids if I’m not doing a particularly dramatic look.
Application: 8/10. It’s really, really easy to apply and you’d struggle to get it wrong. I don’t like too shimmery a look, hence the kabuki brush, but you could layer it up really well if you wanted to.
The look: 8/10. My only gripe with this product is that it can sometimes take me across the tan line into frightening territory. I get a lot of shocked, ‘Oh my gosh, you’re really brown’ comments. I think that’s because it’s so easy to apply and looks so natural that I get carried away. And a note on the shimmer: it’s not glittery, it’s not weirdly shiny – it just gives you a lovely glow.
Staying power: 8/10. I touch my face a lot, so if I apply this in the morning and then go into an office for the day, by the time I’m going home, I’ll need to apply more. If you’re not so ham-fisted as me, you could probably make it last for longer.
Packaging: 9/10. I mean, it’s beautiful, isn’t it? It’s only not a ten because it takes up a lot of room in my make-up bag and gets finger prints on it very easily. But really, I’m being pernickety.
Do I love it? What’s not to love? This bronzer converted me from a lifetime shimmer-hater to a full-time shimmer-lover. If you love being bronze, you will love this too.
